Why Should You Study Theology? | Theology for Every Mom

February 2, 2021

Theology is simply the study of the nature of God.

It is our theology that guides us through each day. Every situation we face, every decision we make, are all dependent on what we believe about God.

That is why R. C. Sproul’s statement that we are all theologians is very true! Whether we admit it or not, we are all theologians. What we believe (or don’t believe) about God and His nature affects everything we do.

Theology Affects Everything We Do

When we’re in the trenches with our littles changing diapers, washing laundry, and sweeping floors, our theology of God’s faithfulness pushes us to be faithful (1 Corinthians 10:13).

When you’re working hard at your job in the office, you’re on a never-ending zoom call, you’re out riding those last miles of a bike race, it is your theology that guides how you persevere in those situations. If you are built upon the Solid Rock, the Sustainer of all life (Colossians 1:17), then you can persevere in His strength.

What about when trouble comes into your life? Your husband loses his job, you have a miscarriage, your child is sick, the car won’t start… How do you handle it? What are your inner thoughts when something like that happens?

What we think, and, therefore, do in those moments comes directly from our theology. What we believe about God guides our actions. Our theology is what guides us everyday.

Do you believe that God is in control of all things? Then you can trust Him when bad things happen. Do you believe that He has your ultimate good in mind? Then you can trust Him when things don’t go your way.

Don’t Just Take It From Me

So, we NEED theology in our lives, mamas. There’s no replacement for knowing and loving the God of the Bible. But don’t just take my word for it.

Scottish pastor and theologian John Dick answered the question, “Why study theology?” with seven wonderful reasons to know God. Here they are:

Why Study Theology?

  1. To ascertain the character of God in its aspect towards us.
  2. To contemplate the display of his attributes in his works and dispensations.
  3. To discover his designs toward man in his original and his present state.
  4. To know this mighty Being as far as he may be known, [which] is the noblest aim of the human understanding.
  5. To learn our duty to him, the means of enjoying his favor, and hopes which we are authorized to entertain, and the wonderful expedient by which our fallen race is restored to purity and happiness.
  6. To love him, the most worthy exercise of our affections.
  7. To serve him, the most honourable and delightful purpose to which we can devote our time and talents.

The Best Part

But do you want to know the best part about studying theology? You can do it right now!

You don’t need a college degree or special training (although those things do help). The pages of your Bible are filled with theology. He’s given us His Word so that we can get to know Him!

Yes, all you need to study theology, to get to know God, is an open heart/mind and your Bible.

When we open our Bibles to read God’s words, whether it be at naptime, morning time, or anywhere in between, we are studying theology.

It’s as simple as that.

So, take time to get to know God. Read your Bible. Study theology. You need it!

That’s the aim of this blog, to help you get to know God. Even as a busy mom, wife, friend, or coworker. Theology is for everyone and we need to learn it.

Having trouble making time to study God’s Word? Here’s a post to help you with that!
