Getting outside everyday is high on my priority list. When we don’t get out, the walls seem to close in and I feel claustrophobic. When we went on a walk this afternoon, I smelled the sweetest, most pleasant, smell. We had passed by the house on our street that has several jasmine vines growing on their fence. What a beautiful scent! I took in several deep breaths and even closed my eyes to enjoy it fully. It was such a sweet, pleasant smell that I even looped our walk back around again to enjoy it for a second time.
The flowers’ scent reminded me of how our lives are to be a sacrifice to the Lord, a sweet-smelling aroma (Ephesians 5:2). When we live in love and bring glory to God, our lives become a sweet aroma to Him. Just as I so enjoyed the flowers’ scent, God enjoys when we glorify and honor Him with our days.
This is true no matter what you are doing. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” That means when we are folding laundry, vacuuming rugs, taking out trash, dressing children, meal planning, budgeting, and all the other things moms do, we are to do them for God’s glory.
My mentor shared this quote with me from Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth’s book:
“Wherever we are at this moment is a sacred place, and whatever He has given us to do is sacred service.”
Wow! Doesn’t that put it into perspective. No matter how mundane motherhood and all that goes with it seems, we are doing sacred service to the Lord because ultimately it is Him we are serving. All that we do is for His glory. It’s not about all the tasks that must be done, but rather about who you are doing them for, your King. When you go through your day with a servant attitude, you bring God glory and you can honor Him with each and every task before you.
I pray that my life will be that sweet-smelling aroma, that jasmine vine, before the Lord so that I can honor Him with all the work that mothering brings.
